Do your children’s program volunteers know how to respond to the behavior of children with special needs?

But we’re just volunteers. We aren’t trained as special education teachers. We can’t handle his behavior.”

Families of children with special needs frequently hear comments like these after the first day of a community program or church activity.

There are many occasions when volunteers in children’s programs may not know how to respond to unusual behaviors of children with special needs. This leads to misunderstanding, fear, and the exclusion of those families from community programs and churches.[/RexpansiveBlock][RexpansiveBlock id=”block_0_3″ type=”text” col=”7″ row=”5″ size_x=”6″ size_y=”3″ color_bg_block=”#ededed” image_bg_block=”” id_image_bg_block=”” type_bg_block=”” video_bg_id=”” video_bg_url=”” photoswipe=”” linkurl=”” image_size=”full” overlay_block_color=”” block_custom_class=”dontation-box” block_padding=”10px;10px;10px;0px;” ]

a series of 4 training videos

“CASTING OUT FEAR: Volunteers & Kids with Special Needs.”

These short videos, 3 – 5 minutes each, will help volunteers learn to respond to behaviors exhibited by children with developmental disabilities, particularly autism spectrum disorders. Instructors will demonstrate responses to a selection of these behaviors: meltdowns, poor attention, hyperactivity, non-compliance, aggression, and communication difficulties.

In many children’s programming settings children may interact with a different leader each week. Casting Out Fear videos which will be available on the Bright Threads Ministries website, could be quickly accessed before or after an encounter with a child. For example, the leader of a Wednesday evening kids’ program could ask a new volunteer to watch a quick video before the children arrive.

“When you or other children get too close to Robert, he may get aggressive. I’d like you to watch this quick video to show how we can respond to this aggression and help Robert handle his need for personal space.”[/RexpansiveBlock][/RexpansiveSection][RexpansiveSection section_name=”” color_bg_section=”” image_bg_section=”” id_image_bg_section=”” video_bg_url_section=”” video_bg_id_section=”” dimension=”full” margin=”” layout=”fixed” block_distance=”20″ full_height=”” custom_classes=”” section_width=”” responsive_background=””][RexpansiveBlock id=”block_1_0″ type=”text” col=”1″ row=”1″ size_x=”12″ size_y=”3″ color_bg_block=”” image_bg_block=”” id_image_bg_block=”” type_bg_block=”” video_bg_id=”” video_bg_url=”” photoswipe=”” linkurl=”” image_size=”full” overlay_block_color=””]
